10 Jun Village of the Great Kivas
Take an immerse tour in the history of the Zuni Pueblo and indigenous cultures found throughout northern New Mexico. You’ll see the walls of the great kivas, and remnants of the former village, remnants of the great kiva, and amazing petroglyphs and pictographs.
At the great kivas villages associated with Chaco Canyon and Ashiwi people, you’ll see ancient petroglyphs, walk along a petroglyph lined ridgeline, with the grand finale seeing the great panel of colored pictographs.
Total Trip Time Including Travel Time to Meeting Point: 2 hr. 45 min. hours (leaving the parking lot of Red Rock Park and Tour Completion): 45 minute drive to site, up to 2 hours for tour.
Meeting Time: Wed. Sept 10th at 1 PM (Immediately following Conference)
Where to Meet: Will meet directly at the Route 11 and Highway 602 junction, just south of route 4 and 602 (½ mile from junction of Route 4 and 602). Kenny will meet you at the site. This is the only gravel road in the area. From this site, the group will caravan to the great Kiva site trailhead approx. 3 miles, park at the gate where the hike and guided journey will begin. From Red Rock Park, drive into Gallup, take Highway 66 to Boardman St., take a left on to 602 continue to the site.

Actual Tour Time: 1-3 PM
Terrain: Will start at valley bottom, with a climb up a mesa on switch backs until mid section, and then a wavy relatively flat gravel trail.
What to Bring: Water, snacks, sun-screen, boots, hat, walking sticks if helpful. Jeans or pants are best, but shorts are acceptable as well. Also bring a good camera or cell phone for pictures.
