25 Jun “Top of the World” Monument Tour
We have a special treat for you with an exciting tour to the top of the Magdelena Peak, (6,625 ft. elevation). After your van shuttle service to the top provided by Southwest Expeditions, Magdalena Peak provides unprecedented 365-degree stunning views of almost the entire Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument, the largest Monument in New Mexico, encompassing five mountain ranges. This part of the tour will involve a very easy small hike. We will have spotting scopes and binoculars on hand to view while your guide speaks on the history of the area you see spread out below you.
After the Peak, you will explore the Native American Pictographs and petroglyphs in Silva Canyon with your guide. Your guide will be speaking on the rich history of the lands you can see from Magdalena Peak and Silva Canyon. History comes alive to experience the Paleolithic period, Mogollon and early Native American presents in and around Magdelena, to the rough and tumble Wild West! This rich diverse history is one of the reasons this beautiful land was set aside for the creation of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument.
After enjoying Magdalena Peaks, the group will load up and head down the mountain to Silva Canyon, where we will hike approx. 1 mile down/up the gulch, to the waiting vans. This part of the hike is moderate, hiking down the canyon and back up around to the top of it. The views are incredible! You have the option of staying near the top if you do not want to go down into the small canyon. We will have plenty of cold drinks on hand!
