Explore the Birds and Wildlife of Leasburg Dam State Park

Leasburg Dam State Park, about 25 minutes north of Las Cruces, is one of the area’s birding hot spots. Over the years, 257 species of birds have been spotted in this riparian habitat. Water, of course, draws a diversity of birds, and the woodlands along the shaded trail are host to many more. As summer fades into fall, we can see year-round resident birds like the Phainopeplas that are drawn to the mistletoe berries to less common species like nuthatches or even an Indigo Bunting. We’ll explore the trail and the area near the dam, where we can see ducks and wading birds. Swallows are also attracted to Leasburg Dam, often flying in large groups as they hunt for bugs.

Birdwatching is a major source of ecotourism revenue and even if you’re not a birder, understanding why others love this popular activity is important. Birders routinely travel to add to their life lists and a rare bird report in your area can bring birders from far and wide. So, come get to know some of the birds common to the Mesilla Valley while learning more about the love of birding with the Mesilla Valley Audubon Society.
