Trail Features:
The terrain of the Grindstone Lake Trail System in Ruidoso is a mostly smooth, well-maintained dirt single-track with a mix of forested paths, open fields, and occasional rocky patches.
- Surface: Mostly packed dirt and pine needles, making it highly accessible. You will encounter a few scattered large rocks, exposed roots, and underlying uneven segments hidden by dirt.
- Elevation: It features a mix of flat areas near the lake, gentle switchbacks, and a few steady, gradual climbs to higher ground.
- Scenery & Cover: The path transitions between shaded pine forests and wide-open mountain clearings. The open areas offer clear views of Sierra Blanca and the reservoir but can get gusty and offer no protection from the sun.
- Shared Use: The trail is a multi-use path. You will likely share the dirt with mountain bikers, trail runners, off-leash dogs, and occasionally horseback riders.
To get there from downtown Ruidoso, take Carrizo Canyon Road (towards the Inn of the Mountain Gods), turn onto Grindstone Canyon Road, and make a left on Resort Road, following the posted signs to the lake.
